What is CMMC 2.0?
The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is a framework designed to enhance the cybersecurity posture of defense contractors and suppliers within the United States. The CMMC was developed by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to address growing concerns regarding the protection of sensitive information and intellectual property within the defense industrial base.
The Problem:Â DoD recognized that there were no adequate, consistent, or enforceable rules of protection or compliance assuring the secure transport of products, services, and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and other logistical communications between vendors and government agencies. This vulnerability creates unchecked opportunities for service disruptions and delays, identity, supply, and intellectual property theft, and exfiltration of proprietary information for criminal or espionage purposes.
The CMMC 2.0 Solution:
To mitigate this vulnerability, the federal government is finalizing version 2.0 of the CMMC in accordance with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cybersecurity frameworks and regulations. Future contracts and solicitations will require all vendors to be certified at one of three certification levels to do business with federal agencies:
Level 1 - Foundational
Level 2 - Advanced
Level 3 - Expert
