PGP Encryption Explained
Gold Comet
PGP encryption is a data encryption software program that allows you to send secure messages that cannot be intercepted and read while they are in transit to the recipient. PGP stands for “Pretty Good Privacy”, but that’s an understatement; PGP software ensures that all sensitive information and communication is protected all the time. PGP encryption software has three main applications:
  • Allows a user to send a secure email
  • Allows the recipient to verify the sender’s identity
  • Encrypts any stored files in the cloud or on a device
When online communications are sent, whether PGP emails or texts, the PGP encryption software converts the words into unreadable text. The coded message is sent to the recipient, who is the only one with the encryption key to turn that unreadable text into a readable message. You do not have to share the code to unlock the message with the recipient beforehand.
It can also be used for files. If you have sensitive files you want to protect, PGP file encryption works the same way in that the recipient opening the file needs the encryption key to view it. You can also use PGP encryption software to encrypt instant messages and hard drives.
